About ARTtype

The name is a combination of art and type, which is basically what the mag- azines is about. It showcases different projects where typography can be seen as a fine art, wether artworks are made of type or vice versa. It appre- ciates that fonts are detailed, handmade masterpieces and will advertise the benefits and beauty of a selected few typefaces per issue.

Brand

The brand will appear mostly on its magazine, of course, and on its online platform. Aditionally, it might be considered as a quality sign for selected type foundries or typefaces.

Proposition

Two key statements of the ARTtype magazine are: ‘rediscover typography’ and ‘with loving attention to detail’. Its purpose is both to be beautiful and useful.

Audience, Distributors

Everyone who is interested in new approaches to typography, the de- tail-lovers of typefaces and calligraphy, the ones who want to preserve original and fading examples found all over the world to rediscover/ recre- ate/ redesign typography. The magazine will be available via its own and other online shops and se- lected magazine stores and will be published quarterly.

Financel model and advertising

As far as possible I would like to prevent ads from entering the magazine clustering its clean approach to typography. As a concept type foundries and workshop partners will be featured in the magazine – if they are willing to pay for this kind of service. ARTtype will cost £ 9; if you buy issues in advance (online) the price per issue will be a bit lower (2 issues = £ 16, 3 issues = £ 24, 4 issues = £ 32), the same applies to subscribers.

Cover Design and series

The cover is partly designed using the golden ratio (image, masthead and Tt intersection position). The cover image is superimposed by a large, white Version of the Tt, creat- ing an interesting figure-background conflict with the image. Additionally, a headline from the main topic / feature article is stated i.e. on the horizontal t bar. The series will be continued this way, using different details of the mast- head over an image of the feature article.

Online interactive blog

Additional topics, user feedback and interaction, teaser articles as a incen- tive to buy the magazine. Parallel to the magazines typeface promotion it will have a “font wall” to promote and showcase web and print fonts.
